This last being difficult, and thought always full of fear of the future, we find escape from our frightened thoughts through entertainment, from politics and religions to stories, movies, TV games, competitive sports, and the mood-altering chemicals of drugs or repetitive behaviors.

The next day, Joe went back to work. Lara went back to drinking. She was soon unable to squeeze enough from the housekeeping money to pay for enough liquor to keep her from getting the shakes, from getting depressed. She had asked friends and family too many times for extra cash, so she couldn’t go back to them anymore without having to answer too many questions. Lara thought about her two friends from high school whose way of earning extra money had once horrified her, but now held the promise of not only more drinking but fun.

And she had gotten really good at hiding bottles, the full vodka bottles at the back of drawers, on closet floors, and the empties in laundry baskets to be left eventually in supermarket recycling bins. His pretty wife, unkempt, was more and more often passed out on the couch, or if she was awake, stumbled uncertainly about the house.
